Bernie Dwyer är död. Hon arbetade som journalist på Radio Havanna och som prisbelönad filmproducent. Bernie avled 69 år gammal, men irländskan lämnar ett starkt avtryck som en outtröttlig kämpe för rättvisa åt de fem kubanerna, politiska fångar i USA för att de avslöjat terrorismen mot Kuba.

Idag nåddes vi av sorgebeskedet från Irland att vår vän Bernie Dwyer har lämnat oss efter en tids svår sjukdom. Hon lämnar ett stort tomrum efter sig, men kommer för alltid att finnas i våra hjärtan. Våra tankar går med djupt deltagande till hennes familj och nära vänner.
Bernie var journalist, filmproducent och en outtröttlig kämpe för Kubas sak och för rättvisa åt de fem kubanerna, politiska fångar i USA för att de avslöjat terrorismen mot Kuba.
Bernie var under många år verksam i solidaritetsarbetet för Kuba i sitt hemland Irland. Från slutet av 90-talet bodde hon på Kuba där hon arbetade som journalist på Radio Havanna och som prisbelönad filmproducent. I sina första dokumentärfilmer anknöt hon till samband mellan de två öarna Kuba och Irland, t.ex. i filmen om Che Guevara och hans irländska bakgrund, Che: The Irish Legacy . Che Guevaras farmors familj utvandrade från Irland till Argentina under hungersnöden på Irland vid mitten av1800-talet.
Bernie engagerade sig tidigt i fallet med de fem kubanerna och har alltsedan deras fängslande 1998 kämpat för att bakgrunden till deras gärning ska bli känd i vida kretsar. De fem kubanerna agerade för att stoppa terrorn mot Kuba genom att infiltrera högerextremistiska exilkubanska grupper i Miami och rapportera till Kuba om deras verksamhet. Bernie säger i en intervju 2012: ”USA:s regering gjorde ytterst lite åt de terroraktioner som planerades och i vissa fall finansierades och tränades terroristerna av CIA. De Fem infiltrerade dem för att rapportera om deras aktiviteter.” De Fem hade alltså ett uppdrag mot terror, och detta blev också namnet på den film
Mission Against Terror som Bernie och hennes medarbetare Roberto Ruiz Rebo producerade 2004.

Bernie reste ut på turnéer i Nordamerika och Europa för att presentera filmen och tala för frigivandet av de fem kubanerna. Många av De Fems anhöriga medverkar i filmen och Bernie utvecklade nära vänskapsband till dem. Den mänskliga aspekten är ett mycket viktigt drag i filmen. Den kände f.d. CIA-agenten Philip Agee, som gick bort 2008, medverkar också i denna film och vittnar om USA:s terror mot Kuba.
2008 fick Bernie ta emot Kubas Vänskapsmedalj för sitt mångåriga engagemang för Kuba och arbete för rättvisa för de fem kubanerna.
2010 kom Bernies nästa film som visade hur USA:s ”diplomati” arbetar på Kuba.
The Day Diplomacy Died handlar om hur USA genom sina diplomater på intressekontoret i Havanna betalade och dirigerade ett flertal personer på Kuba som utgav sig för att vara oberoende journalister. I flera intervjuer avslöjade hon hela denna oblyga verksamhet, vars syfte var att underminera det sociala samhällssystem Kuba byggt upp sedan revolutionen 1959. Hon visade också på det enastående arbete som agenter i Kubas säkerhetstjänst uträttat när de infiltrerade och avslöjade de s.k. dissidenterna och också avstyrde attentat och våldsaktioner.
Bernie Dwyer har många vänner här i Sverige och också i många andra länder.

HAVANA TIMES — Irish journalist and documentary filmmaker Bernie Dwyer, residing in Cuba, has died at the age of 69. Dwyer worked for many years for Radio Habana Cuba, the island’s short wave window to the world.
Dwyer had been active in the campaign to free the Cuban Five, and made several documentary films including “The Day Diplomacy Died”, “Mission Against Terror”, “Che, The Irish Legacy” and “The Footprints of Cecilia McPartland.”
Bernie arrived in Cuba for the first time in 1988 as a member of an international work brigade and after other visits resided on the island since 1998, writing for Radio Habana, and making her documentaries, notes the Cuban News Agency.

Irish journalist and filmmaker Bernie Dwyer interviewed in 2010 by the Cuban News Agency on her latest documentary, The Day Diplomacy Died made the film to expose "the absence of any action taken against the Miami terrorists by the White House" as well as why the Cuban Five were apprehended while the "avowedly violent organizations like Comandos F-4, Brothers to the Rescue, Cuban American National Foundation’s armed wing, and individuals like Luis Posada Carriles, have operated with complete impunity from within the United States to attack Cuba—with the knowledge and support of the FBI and CIA."
The Cuban state agents featured in “The Day Diplomacy Died” were working in Cuba against the so-called “internal opposition” set-up and supported by US diplomats in the US Interests Section in Havana from the very beginning except for a period under the presidency of Jimmy Carter.
The Day Diplomacy Died
When the book “The Dissidents” was published in Havana Bernie set to work on her documentary.
The Dissidents were eight of the best of the best of the Cuban revolution, Cuban State Security agents who were prosecution witnesses at the 2003 Havana trials who blew their cover as counterparts of the Cuban Five.
The former Cuban state agents infiltrated various groups that were working under the direct influence of diplomatic staff at the US Interests Section office in Havana specifically to stop US terrorist groups.
In a lot of cases people didn’t really understand the situation because of the way Cuba is presented in the foreign media but after some explanation they began to realize the role the US diplomatic staff was playing in interfering in Cuba’s internal
affairs.
It also helps to explain the history of US involvement in trying to bring an end to the Cuban Revolution.
The
Cuban agents charged with conspiracy to spy are Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González. (René González was released on Oct. 7, 2011).
When Raul addressed the Cuban national assembly in Havana on Monday regarding asylum for Edward Snowden he said he could not. Later he would explain that Snowden had become diplomatically toxic.
In his speech, the 82-year-old Cuban leader said his country was aware of the kind of secretive NSA programs Snowden revealed. He said that as a longtime enemy of Washington, the Caribbean nation has been ‘‘one of the most harassed and spied-upon nations on the planet.’’
Bernie Dwyer's documentary is
the story behind the lock up of 75 “independent” journalists, trade unionists, and librarians in Cuba in 2003 through the eyes of four ex-Cuban state agents working undercover.
The mainstream media never fully investigates the role played by the US diplomats in Cuba in controlling the “dissidents” movement.
