Created in December 1949, the UNRWA, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, is a relief and human development agency. It was set up to provide jobs on public works projects and direct relief for the Arabs who fled from Israel during the fighting that followed the end of the British mandate over Palestine. Today it provides education, health care, social services and emergency aid to 5 million Palestinian refugees from the 1948 and 1967 wars and their descendents.
This seminar at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs will highlight the issue of how the UNRWA will adapt to the recent changes in the Middle East. Filippo Grandi, Commissioner-General of the UNRWA, and Gunilla Carlsson, Minister for International Development Cooperation, will give their views on the issue.
