A group of young people refuse to stand by and watch as their area collapses into crime and violence. They organize themselves and form the Panthers.
The Panthers
Biskopsgården is a socio economically exposed suburb to Göteborg, Sweden. The last couple of years this suburb has suffered from the cutdowns in the welfare system, causing increasing poverty and social vulnerability. As a result, criminal gangs grow stronger and shootings resulting in deaths have almost become an everday occurance.
A group of young people in the area refuse to stand by and watch while the world around them collapses. Inspired by The Black Panther Party For Self Defence they organize themselves and form the Panthers For The Restoration Of The Suburbs. They demand participation in the decisions taken by politicians and officials in order to create a shift in power which means more power to the people.
The Panthers seek social change in order to make a difference in young people’s lives. The Panthers have assisted young people in expressing their dissatisfaction and to stand up and confront politicians.
They organise theme days, summer and winter camps, several football tournaments with teams from other suburbs, two International Workers Day festivals with Bobby Seale, founder of The Black Panther Party, Emory Douglas, minister of culture in The Black Panther Party, and Dead Prez as guests. And they led the struggle to open the closed down youth center, so that young people can have a place to be instead of hanging out in the streets and get recruited by gangs.
The Documentary
Since 2011 we have documented the Panthers and their struggle. In the film we follow the Panthers through joy and sorrow in their fight for social justice. Now we only have the last few steps left to finish this project and start spreading the Panthers fascinating story.
We are three people making this film:
- Anders Rundberg, filmmaker and activist.
- Jennifer Jerez, filmmaker, project coordinator and social activist.
- Leo Palmestål, filmmaker and activist.

We are doing everything we can to have a feature-length documentary out during January next year. We are almost there, we just need a little help to make it as great as it can be.
Why should I support this project?
This is a story that needs to be told. The problems these youngsters are facing can be found in every suburb in Sweden, and in most of Europe, maybe even in the rest of the world. We believe that it is important to show the power we have when we come together and organize ourselves to fight a common goal. To make history, and a better future.
