In the 1980s Reagan economics in favor of unearned wealth reduced most people's opportunities in "Amerika." This film, although set in the past (and despite its great literary origins, less known than German films like Stroszek and Paris, Texas) was an important examination of immigrant life. Kafka's work has also been adapted by major directors like Haneke (The Castle) and Welles (The Trial), but I felt this was closer to the truth of Kafka's writing.
