    Venus of Willendorf
    The first generally accepted piece of prehistoric
    art is assumed to be the Venus of Willendorf.

    [c. 30,0000 - 25,000 BC; limestone sculpture; height: 11 cm;
    from lower Austria].

    This sculpture was small and portable. Clearly the female
    reproductive anatomy has been exagerrated and it is there-
    fore believe that it was a fertility symbol carried by the male
    hunter/gatherer as a reminder of his mate back home.
